Biografie van counterpart

Counterpart was formed in November 1998. All the members had been in other bands before, but finally hoped to have found each others counterpart, so to speak, in this new outcome called Counterpart; A band spreading a message of brutal and devastating hardcore. At that time the hardcore style that was played in Europe by bands like Rykers, Brightside, Backfire and Right Direction was very popular and was an influence for the new breed of hardcore bands. So it was no surprise that Counterpart first started out as a so called Eurocore band.

The band started playing mostly self organized gigs in March 1999 and in June 1999 they recorded their first cd-demo "Strike One". This demo helped them to spread their brutality and resulted in playing more gigs. In the beginning of 2000, original drummer (Xander) is replaced (by Mike) and in May 2000 a second guitarplayer (Chris) is added to the band. After these line-up changes Counterpart decided to hit the studio again. In June 2000 they recorded their debut MCD "Blood Honour Trust". This new album sounds a lot more professional and has a much better production to it than their first demo. With this new MCD Counterpart was ready to kick it off seriously. Positive reactions by magazines and fans, and shows all over the Netherlands and Belgium were the results. Unfortunately Mike decides to leave the band. This came at a bad time, considering the future shows that were to be played. After some auditions, Leon joined the band as their new drummer. Being a 5-piece again, Counterpart could continue their mission. In March 2001 they get to play the European Hardcore party with Madball, Born from Pain, Backfire, Tech9, Liar, VOT, etc. Some legendary shows follow in May and June with No Turning Back, Uppercut, Next Step Up, Born from Pain and Devil Inside.

Counterpart by now had developed an energetic live act with a brutal and aggressive sound. Also style-wise Counterpart clearly developed and the music got more metal influences to it. In September 2001, Counterpart hits the studio again to record four new songs to let everybody hear what they were up to. The songs appear on a split cd with Urban Conflict, hailing from Eindhoven. This cd entitled "Crossfire" was released in May 2002 on Core Records by Serge (currently known for running Upmagazine). A cd release party was organized in Counterpart's hometown Vlissingen and that night was a blast! People were moshing, stagediving, crowdsurfing, windmilling and what not! Surely one night to remember! Other bands that played the show were Urban Conflict and Backfire. A friend of the band videotaped the show and produced a clip of one of the songs (crossed the line) on the cd. Although the video clip cannot be compared to the smooth and wellproduced stuff of today, it succeeded in capturing the feeling and the darkness that matched the content of the song.

Till the beginning of 2003 shows are being played on a regular basis. But then in February 2003, Counterpart decided to go on hiatus for several reasons. First of all to write new songs and second some members needed more time for their personal lives. Looking back, this was the beginning of the end of the band. As some sort of last breath, Counterpart manage to organize some wicked shows in September and October 2003 with Shattered Realm and Integrity. However, soon thereafter, the motivation was lacking to continue in this formation. So in November 2003 Counterpart decided to call it quits after five years. Members continued in other bands, such as Incarnate and Moment of Truth.
