Biografie van Martyr
When Rick decided to form a new metal band in 1982 which should distinguish themselves from other Dutch metal bands at that time, he remembered he saw drummer Peter van Loenen perform at their school in Utrecht. He was highly impressed by his fantastic technique and asked him to join. Marcel Heesakkers and Toine van der Linden from Target joined them and Martyr was born. They wrote 4 tracks to record the first demo "If its too loud, youre too old, when Robert van Haren, one of the engineers, joined them for the vocal parts.
It took only until the 2nd demo "Metal Torture , recorded at studio Weldam, before metal magazine Aardschok considered Martyr to be Hollands best new metal band. They were totally surprised by the excellent reviews worldwide and this demo simply became an underground bestseller.
Meanwhile they contributed "Snow And Fire from "Metal Torture on the compilation cassette "When The Hammer Falls Down. Thrilled by an excellent review in Aardschok magazine, Roadrunner Records contacted them to contribute 2 songs to the collection album "Dutch Steel. So.they took off to Spitsbergen studios in Groningen to meet with producer and Veronica DJ Alfred Lagarde and technician Michiel Hoogeboezem. Alfred went crazy when he heard "Snow And Fire and started dancing on the console! (OK OK after sniffing his coke ,which was "cut on the console, first).
Unfortunately the 2nd song , "Speed Of Samurai, the fans' favorite and heaviest songs at that time, did not make it on the album. Why??? 17 years later they still don´t know the answer.
Because Megaton Records noticed them selling that big amount of copies of the "Metal Torture demo by their own record shop Boudisque in Amsterdam they could not do anything else than offering them a record contract to make some money themselves. Peter, however, still attending school was not able to spend all that time with the band anymore. Marcel introduced them to Target´s drummer Elias Papadopoulos, who was immediately recruited . Besides proving to be a powerful drummer he also adored the same "heroes they did.
And off they went , writing songs and back in the studio again. This time Martyr hooked up with producer Faas van der Pol at the Trinity Studios to record some demos first. Between the many live performances they did, they suffered some changes in the band. Robert left; Adrian Quinten joined and left, Gerard Vangouw arrived and stayed.
In 1985 the Martyr For the Universe fanclub was established , packed their bags, said bye to mom and dad and went on the road. Supporting Exciter (Canada) and doin´their own shows.
1986 was also an important year for Martyr. Finally they got a professional management and were offered a new record deal at a new record company: Metalloid Records. Recording "Darkness At Times Edge was a real treat for them. Staying at the Silvox Studios with producer Caspar Falke for 1 month they had the feeling this was the best material ever and this album could be a major break-through in their musical careers so far.
Releasing "Darkness went off with a blast. Great shows performed for lots of people, including a tour with Dutch co-rockers Helloise, a video clip, an appearance on Sky Channel´s Monsters of Rock, and lots and lots of fan mail. This had to result in a great album sale but.due to lack of promotion and distribution from Metalloid Records the album was hardly available in other countries around Holland and Belgium.
When Marcel and Elias left Martyr around 1987 Rick tried to continue the band in a new line-up. However without the success Martyr used to have, it was hard to keep up the of the early days, not only as musicians but also as friends.
In 2008 Martyr signed with Rusty Cage Records to release a new album Fear The Universe, containing a re-issue of the old time classis For The Universe and a complete new album titled Fear wrapped in a double digipack.
