Biography
Levi Wesenhagen was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on February 14th 1991, the son of Manuel Lopes Andrade, a railroad police officer, and Martha Wesenhagen, author and managing director of ML Records & Management. Being born on Valentines day always gave his birthday a special twist. Levi grew up as an only child with separated parents and was partially raised by his grandmother. As an A&R manager, his mother was always on the road to provide for her family. Thus, Levi learned to entertain himself.
Music has always been a great part of his life. Levi's mother taught him the great love for different styles of music such as jazz, R&B, hip hop, classical music, house and every note in between. Meeting lots of different artists in his childhood, it could be expected that Levi would want to do something similar. But the opposite was proven reality when he announced that he wanted to become either a veterinarian or a lawyer.
Levis life was dramatically disrupted when he lost his 30-year old father in a car accident in 1999.
At this point his mother decided to send Levi to the American International School of Rotterdam. This way, he was able to focus on learning the English language and on how to play the saxophone, rather than mourning the loss of his father. Within less than three months, Levi learned the English language fluently, which is now like a native language to him. The saxophone did not yet capture his heart.
In the summer of 2001, Levi and his mother packed their belongings and moved to the Balearic island of Mallorca, Spain, where Levi attended two years of British international education. On the beautiful island he developed a great love for scuba diving. At the age of eleven he got himself two PADI diving certificates. In 2003 the holiday feeling faded out and Levi started to really miss his family in the Netherlands. Due to circumstances his mom could not instantly leave Mallorca, so Levi moved in with his aunt and nephew in a small town near Amsterdam. His grandmother joined them and helped to run the household. Mother and son were permanently reunited at the beginning of 2004. They started a new life in Amsterdam.
In the following years, Levi took a special interest in the music of Beyoncé, Robin Thicke, Alicia Keys, Usher, Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake and Luther Vandross. He always sang, but never in public or even near a spot where he thought others might be able to hear him. His mother always knew he kept something to himself but she couldnt put her finger on it.
In November 2009, a girlfriend signed him up for the Dutch X-Factor after she overheard him singing in the shower. She was astonished, merely because she had never heard him sing before, or even talk about it. Levi was extremely reluctant about the audition. After a long and hard struggle he decided to audition. To prepare himself properly he took his first lesson from vocal coach Esther Mooijman in Rotterdam. She was pleasantly surprised by the capacity and tone of his voice, but she immediately noticed something odd. She advised him to go and see an ENT specialist.
Now for the first time in his life, he had the courage to sing before his mother. He brought tears to her eyes. She knew he could sing.
Levi never auditioned X-Factor because he and his mother thought that he wasnt up to it yet. His voice would need more guidance. When his voice was checked in hospital he was diagnosed with a vocal cord polyp.
Two days before removing the polyp, Levi recorded Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross & Richard Marx.
