Biografie van Hewdie
"Blessed with a pleasant, relaxed sounding singing voice (Hewdie) turns minimalism into art".
"Using minimal means (Hewdie) achieves a maximum of expressiveness". (Oor Magazine, 2010).
These quotes sum up in a few words the essence of Hewdie's music.
Hewdie is a singer-songwriter from the Netherlands. He was born as Peet Didderiëns in the southernmost province of Limburg, near the town of Roermond. He started playing the guitar in his late teens and wrote a song with the first two chords he learned.
Hewdie is influenced by folk, blues and jazz and he is a big fan of Sixties West-Coast groups like Buffalo Springfield and Moby Grape.
Peet's first serious band was a psychedelic garagerock outfit called Digestives. Influenced by Australian punk and underground bands like Radio Birdman, New Christs and Died Pretty, Digestives had a unique sound and strong original material, but the band's impact was limited to the bar and club circuit of the southern Netherlands.
Peet moved to mellower musical pastures in the mid-nineties, playing folky indie and roots music in a succession of bands. The Restless Hearts, Society Dog Show and Feed The Cynics all disbanded with a handful of gigs and cassette-only releases to their credit.
His collaboration with Feed The Cynics's lead singer Bas Veldhuizen resulted in more experimental sounds. The duo released an album that combined traditional song structures with layers of musique concréte, gritty pre-digital samples, tape loops and sound effects.
These experiments with a 4-track recorded led to a fascination with recording techniques and vintage equipment and Peet now runs a small, all analogue recording studio.
In 2004, using the alias Buksjek, Peet released a single in his native, Limburg dialect. It garnered airplay and was singled out by the Volkskrant newspaper as an alternative to more "folklore" oriented regional music.
Peet has also written soundtrack music for documentaries and corporate films, and for several years worked as a freelance sound recordist for independent documentary film projects. He has traveled extensively in Europe and South-East Asia.
Attempts to start a band in the Roermond area in 2001 failed, but the proposed band name "Hewdie" stuck and Peet began using it for his solo work as a singer-songwriter.
Hewdie's debut single "Cold Eyes" was released by Rauh Records in 2004. Inspired by the momentum of the airplay and press write-ups it garnered, a 3 song e.p. called "Train Left This Morning" followed later that year.
Not satisfied with the direction his music was going in and looking for a more direct way of expressing himself, Peet spent the next two years honing his craft. He re-emerged in 2006 with "Bye Bye Melancholy Baby", a mini album filled with wistful acoustic songs about heartbreak and estrangement. The songwriting was more personal and the arrangements were stripped down to the bare essentials. It was released with little fanfare, but has since found favor with a growing group of fans.
The current Hewdie album is called "Outsider Blues". Influenced by the free flowing jazz proze of beat icon Jack Kerouac and the hard boiled street literature of Hubert Selby Jr., it marks a change to a more narrative style of writing and contains Peet's most varied collection of songs to date. More refined melodically and less stark than "Bye Bye Melancholy Baby", the album was received very well by listeners and critics alike. It has received ample airplay and the first pressing of the cd had practically sold out.
Recording sessions for a new album have been scheduled for the spring and summer of 2011. For these sessions Peet will be joined on bass by Brian "Fuzzy" Frederiks and on percussion by Gertjan Hanckmann.
